Dismal Conditions in State Hospitals

By a Staff Reporter, Kolkata, August, 14: A meeting was organised by the Citizens ' Forum at Rammohan Hall, Kolkata, on 12 May to discuss the conditions of the hospitals in the state. Many eminent doctors, government officials and important public figures were invited to speak on the occasion. Dr. P. C. Sengupta, head of the department of cardiology of the S.S.K.M. hospital, complained about the lack of cleanliness in the hospital. He also said that an imported E.C.G. machine became out of order as it had not been used for a long time, although there was a great need of this machine for a large number of cardiac patients coming to the hospital. Dr. N. N. Das of Bankura Sammilani Hospital complained about the lack of sufficient number of beds for the indoor patients. He added is that stray cats and dogs freely moved about within the hospital wards. Dr. P.K. Dutta, head of the orthopaedic department of Berhampore hospital reported that the only X-ray machine of the hospital was lying inoperative. Sm. Mahasweta Debi, who was present in the meeting demanded demanded immediate attention of the government to this dismal condition in the hospitals. People in the audience also participated in the discussion. It was resolved that a memorandum would be sent to the Chief Minister asking for immediate improvement of the conditions in the hospitals of the state.
